Klaas started his career as technical officer at the Dutch Royal Air force before joining the Dutch airplane builder Fokker as manager in the civil aircraft maintenance department. In 1995 his career took on a new phase in the renewable energy sector when he became director of operations for two wind turbine manufacturers in succession.
He has managed manufacturing, installation and service of wind turbines all over the globe and his technical expertise came to bear in managing the design division of a Dutch direct-drive manufacturer. After this he became R&D vice president for the rotor blades division of the Asian wind turbine manufacturer, Suzlon. His career in the wind energy industry culminated in designing and implementing a knowledge transfer organisation to facilitate the translation of European designs to Asian mass production.
In October 2011, Klaas became CEO of the Benelux office of KIC InnoEnergy, which is responsible for the European developments in energy-efficient buildings and cities.
